I am always hesitant to voice an opinion in the midst of so much noise. But I believe this moment calls for moral clarity in the midst of profound controversy.
God Ordains Nations & Boundaries
Scripture assumes a world of nations and jurisdictions, not a borderless utopia. Acts 17
teaches that God determined peoples and the boundaries of their dwelling, which means borders are not inherently unbiblical. An agency tasked with enforcing immigration law is not automatically opposed to love of neighbor. It is one way a nation seeks to steward order in a fallen world.
Government as God’s Servant for Order
Romans 13 and 1 Peter 2 present civil authority as a servant of God for justice, restraining wrongdoing, and protecting public peace. That does not sanctify every policy choice or excuse misconduct, but it does establish that enforcement itself can be legitimate. If laws cannot be enforced, a society loses the ability to protect the vulnerable, deter exploitation, and maintain public trust.
Justice Must Be Humane & Accountable
The Bible pairs authority with warnings: leaders must not show partiality, abuse power, or oppress the vulnerable. God repeatedly commands His people not to mistreat others. For Christians, that means affirming lawful enforcement while insisting it be exercised with integrity, proportionality, and real accountability, especially when families and children are affected.
Two Things Can Be True & Not Zero-Sum
Christians can support border enforcement and call for reforms that reduce suffering, target truly dangerous actors, punish corruption, and ensure transparent, humane procedures.
In a world of slogans, the Christian voice should sound like Scripture: serious about order, relentless about mercy, and committed to truth.
